Neale Wade Academy Case Study – Dickensian English Mural

An Inspector Calls and Jekyll and Hyde quotes featured in Dickensian English mural

At Neale Wade Academy in March, Cambridgeshire, a plain corridor has been reimagined as a shadowed Victorian street. What was once a transitional space is now an immersive Dickensian English mural experience, rich in atmosphere, layered with GCSE literature references and designed to make English visible beyond the classroom.

This project demonstrates how carefully considered school wall graphics can turn everyday spaces into powerful cultural statements. The corridor is no longer just a route between lessons; it is a visual embodiment of the English curriculum

The Brief

Like many secondary schools, Neale Wade Academy had invested heavily in teaching and curriculum development. However, leaders recognised that the physical environment did not yet reflect that ambition.

The English department wanted a space that:

  • Reinforced core GCSE texts
  • Encouraged passive revision through daily exposure
  • Elevated the identity of the subject area
  • Brought cohesion to surrounding corridor displays
  • Added depth and character to the school’s wider branding

The concept of a Dickensian English mural quickly emerged, a dramatic streetscape inspired by A Christmas Carol, but layered with references to Macbeth, An Inspector Calls and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

This would be a corridor that felt intentional. immersive yet academically purposeful.

The Design Process

From Curriculum to Concept

We began not with artwork, but with conversation.

Working alongside the Head of English, we mapped the texts studied at GCSE and identified key themes: morality, ambition, social responsibility, duality and redemption. Quotations were selected not simply for visual appeal, but for their utility in revision and discussion.

The design narrative then unfolded naturally.

At ground level, cobbled Victorian streets stretch into the distance. Gas lamps flicker in the dusk. Shopfront shadows hint at stories unfolding beyond the viewer’s sightline.

Subtle silhouettes and atmospheric detailing nod to:

  • The moral reckoning of A Christmas Carol
  • The psychological tension of Macbeth
  • The societal critique of An Inspector Calls
  • The dual identity within Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

The corridor becomes theatrical without becoming overwhelming. It invites attention, but it does not distract from learning.

Cohesive Learning Environment Design

A defining feature of this project was continuity. Rather than isolated panels, the artwork wraps the entire corridor to create a unified scene.

The printed cobblestone flooring extends the immersion, grounding students physically within the Victorian world above them.

This is strategic learning environment design, not decoration for decoration’s sake, but a space engineered to reinforce subject identity.

The Installation

In a busy secondary setting, aesthetic impact must be matched by durability.

Built for High-Traffic Environments

We specified robust, scuff-resistant vinyl wall coverings with a protective matt laminate to preserve depth of colour and prevent glare from overhead lighting.

The printed flooring was installed using anti-slip compliant materials, ensuring safety alongside visual continuity.

Every edge, seam and transition was installed with precision, creating a finish that appears integrated into the building itself rather than applied to it.

Safeguarding and Professional Delivery

Our DBS-checked installation team worked in close coordination with site staff to minimise disruption. Timelines were carefully managed, and safeguarding protocols were followed throughout.

The finished corridor feels permanent, polished and purposeful, a long-term investment rather than a temporary display.

The Impact

The most powerful outcomes of the Dickensian English mural have been cultural rather than cosmetic.

A Corridor That Teaches

Students now encounter key quotations daily. Staff have observed spontaneous references to lines displayed on the walls during lessons.

The environment acts as an additional layer of revision, subtle, continuous and unavoidable.

Behaviour Through Environment

There is a noticeable shift in tone within the corridor. The darker, atmospheric aesthetic encourages calmer movement and greater respect for the space.

When a corridor feels intentional, it is treated as such.

Raising the Profile of English

The installation visibly communicates the school’s academic priorities. English is not confined to a classroom; it occupies a central, prominent position in the building.

This strengthens internal subject identity and reinforces expectations of rigour and engagement.

Inspection and Visitor Impression

The mural provides tangible evidence of literacy embedded across the school environment. For visitors and inspectors alike, it demonstrates coherence between curriculum intent and physical space.

Strengthening School Branding

The Dickensian streetscape aligns with other corridor displays and contributes to a consistent visual language across the academy.

It signals creativity, ambition and attention to detail, qualities valued by both families and stakeholders.
