Yeoman Park Academy Case Study – School Hall Branding Transformation

As part of phase II branding for its new building, Yeoman Park Academy in Nottingham commissioned Design for Education to transform its School Hall into a visually coherent, inclusive and aspirational space.

The School Hall sits at the heart of the academy and plays a vital role in daily life, assemblies, performances, celebrations and cross-key stage activities all take place here. However, despite being a modern facility, the space lacked warmth and identity. Through carefully considered school wall graphics and bespoke educational wall art, we helped the academy create a School Hall that reflects growth, aspiration and progression from early years through to sixth form.

The Brief

Yeoman Park Academy provides specialist education for children aged 3–19 with autism spectrum disorder and profound and multiple learning difficulties. Learning stages span primary, secondary and sixth form, making visual clarity and inclusivity essential.

The academy had already implemented a colour-zoned navigation system across the building, based on the four seasons:

  • Discoverers – Primary age – Green (Spring)
  • Adventurers – Profound learning needs – Green (Spring)
  • Explorers – Sensory learners – Pink/Purple (Summer)
  • Investigators – Secondary age – Yellow/Brown (Autumn)
  • Researchers – Sixth Form – Blue (Winter)

These colours support wayfinding and reduce anxiety for pupils navigating the building.

For the School Hall, leaders wanted to build on this system while introducing a unifying visual narrative. The agreed concept centred around a nest, symbolising belonging and safety, with birds emerging in flight to represent:

  • Aspirations
  • Flourishing
  • Growth across all key stages
  • Transition from childhood through to adulthood

The hall needed to feel uplifting but calm, aspirational yet sensitive to sensory needs.

The Design Process

Collaborative Consultation

In specialist settings, effective learning environment design begins with listening. We worked closely with senior leaders and staff to ensure the School Hall visuals aligned with pupil needs, communication strategies and safeguarding considerations.

We explored how colour, scale and placement could enhance accessibility rather than overwhelm. Every decision was grounded in inclusion.

Developing the Nest Concept

The central nest became the anchor point of the design, representing community and belonging. From this focal point, birds extend outward across the hall walls, each corresponding to one of the academy’s five groupings.

To maintain consistency with the existing building zoning:

  • Discoverers and Adventurers incorporated green spring tones
  • Explorers featured softer summer pink and purple hues
  • Investigators reflected autumnal yellows and browns
  • Researchers incorporated calm winter blues

Each bird subtly reflected its seasonal colour palette, reinforcing navigation cues already embedded throughout the academy.

Importantly, the birds were designed with clarity of form and gentle movement — expressive enough to inspire, yet structured enough to avoid visual overload. This approach aligns with our wider expertise in https://www.designforeducation.co.uk/category/school-halls/, where communal areas must balance scale with sensitivity.

The School Hall graphics were designed to wrap the space cohesively, creating flow rather than isolated panels. This ensured the hall felt intentional and unified, not simply decorated.

The Installation

Durable, Specialist Materials

Given the multi-purpose use of the School Hall, durability was essential. We installed high-performance vinyl graphics designed specifically for education settings, offering:

  • Anti-scuff protection
  • Easy cleaning
  • Long-term colour stability
  • Smooth, wipeable surfaces

Edges were precision-finished to prevent lifting and ensure longevity in a busy hall environment.

Safeguarding and Accessibility

In a setting supporting pupils with complex needs, installation standards must be exacting. Our team ensured:

  • No raised or hazardous edges
  • Clear sightlines for supervision
  • Appropriate visual heights for accessibility
  • Careful scheduling to minimise disruption

The result was a seamless finish that enhances the architecture rather than competing with it.  Our experience as school wall graphics specialists ensures that installation quality matches design ambition.

The Impact of the School Hall Transformation

The redesigned School Hall has strengthened both the practical function and emotional resonance of the space.

Improved Wayfinding and Orientation

By aligning bird imagery with existing seasonal colour zones, the hall reinforces navigation cues already embedded across the building. Pupils can visually connect their group identity with the wider academy narrative.

For students with autism and profound learning difficulties, this consistency supports reassurance and spatial awareness.

Enhanced Pupil Engagement

The nest and birds provide natural talking points and visual anchors. Staff have noted that pupils reference the imagery during assemblies and transition times.

The theme of flight and growth resonates across age groups, from early learners identifying colours and shapes to sixth form students reflecting on progression and independence.

Positive Behavioural Influence

Clear visual structure contributes to calmer movement within the hall. Defined visual zones help pupils understand where they belong during shared events, reducing uncertainty.

Strengthened School Pride and Identity

The School Hall now feels unmistakably “Yeoman Park”. Visitors immediately encounter a space that communicates aspiration, inclusion and belonging.

The cohesive branding complements other school wall graphics and corridor displays across the site, creating a unified identity.

Ofsted Readiness

Inspectors look for environments that support pupils’ individual needs and development. The hall now clearly reflects:

  • A coherent vision of progression from primary to sixth form
  • Thoughtful adaptation to sensory and communication needs
  • Consistent whole-school branding

The physical environment visibly reinforces the academy’s ethos.

Community Perception

As a central gathering space, the School Hall hosts parents, governors and external professionals. The transformation has elevated first impressions, presenting a setting that feels warm, aspirational and carefully considered.
