The Westgate School Case Study – Transforming a GCSE Maths Wall Display

GCSE Maths wall display transforming secondary school maths corridor at The Westgate School Slough

At The Westgate School in Slough, a full-scale site refurbishment presented an opportunity to rethink how learning happens beyond the classroom. As part of a whole-school visual transformation, we delivered a high-impact GCSE Maths wall display designed to turn a standard corridor into a structured academic environment.

Rather than treating walls as decorative surfaces, the school wanted them to become tools for reinforcement, aspiration and consistency. The maths corridor became a flagship example of how intelligent learning environment design can support GCSE outcomes while strengthening school identity.

The Brief

The Westgate School is an ambitious secondary school committed to raising standards and creating a culture of academic excellence. During a major site-wide improvement programme, leaders recognised that the maths department’s corridor did not reflect the importance of the subject within the curriculum.

The objectives were clear:

  • Create a GCSE-focused environment that supports curriculum delivery
  • Make key knowledge visible and accessible
  • Develop corridor displays that feel structured and intentional
  • Elevate the perception of the maths department
  • Ensure long-term durability suitable for a busy secondary setting

The school did not want generic posters or temporary signage. They wanted integrated school wall graphics that would feel permanent, premium and academically purposeful.

The Design Process – From Blank Walls to Structured Learning Zones

Instead of approaching the corridor as one long visual strip, we divided the space into purposeful knowledge zones. Each section focused on a key GCSE strand, number, algebra, ratio, geometry and statistics, enabling pupils to associate areas of the corridor with specific mathematical disciplines.

This zoning approach added structure and rhythm to the space, improving both aesthetics and wayfinding.

Embedding GCSE Intent

Working alongside the maths leadership team, we carefully selected:

  • Core formulae that pupils frequently need to recall
  • Mathematical vocabulary essential for exam success
  • Visual representations of abstract concepts
  • Exam technique prompts designed for quick reinforcement

Typography was bold and legible at distance, ensuring that information could be absorbed even during short transition periods. The aim was subtle repetition, allowing pupils to repeatedly encounter key concepts without feeling overwhelmed.

The colour palette was aligned with the school’s existing school branding, ensuring consistency across departments following the wider refurbishment programme.

The Installation

A maths corridor in a secondary school experiences constant movement. Bags brush against walls, pupils line up for lessons and cleaning teams work daily across surfaces. Longevity was therefore critical.

We installed the GCSE Maths wall display using high-grade vinyl graphics finished with a protective matt laminate. This combination offers:

  • Enhanced scratch resistance
  • Washable surfaces suitable for school cleaning regimes
  • Fade-resistant colour retention
  • Smooth edge finishing for a seamless look

All materials meet UK fire rating requirements and are suitable for painted plasterboard surfaces typically found in secondary schools.

The installation was completed efficiently, coordinated around the school timetable to minimise disruption. Precision alignment ensured the finished space looked cohesive and professionally integrated into the architecture.

The Impact – Turning Corridors into Learning Assets

The maths corridor is no longer simply a route between classrooms. It now functions as a visual revision guide, reinforcing knowledge daily.

Staff have noted that pupils refer to displayed formulae during discussions and that visual exposure supports memory recall. The GCSE Maths wall display has become part of everyday academic language within the department.

Raising Expectations

High-quality educational wall art communicates a clear message: this is a department that values excellence. When walls reflect ambition, it subtly influences behaviour and mindset.

The upgraded environment supports:

  • Improved corridor conduct
  • Greater departmental pride
  • Clearer identity for the maths faculty

Supporting Inspection and Accountability

Modern, curriculum-aligned corridor displays demonstrate intentional planning. They reflect curriculum sequencing and subject coherence, elements frequently explored during inspection conversations.

Visitors and stakeholders touring the school now see a maths department that visibly communicates its academic priorities.

Strengthening Whole-School Cohesion

Because this project formed part of a wider refurbishment across all departments, the maths corridor contributes to a unified visual language across the building. This consistency enhances community perception and reinforces the school’s commitment to high standards.
