Transform external walls into a vibrant, chronological journey through time.

Creating an educational environment shouldn’t stop at the classroom door. At Harvills Hawthorn Primary School in West Bromwich, the leadership team recognised a fantastic opportunity to turn their external play areas into a high-impact educational resource. By installing a bespoke outdoor history timeline, the school has successfully extended its curriculum into the playground, encouraging “learning through play” and curiosity during break times. This Harvills Hawthorn Primary School Case Study explores how strategic learning environment design can transform external walls into a vibrant, chronological journey through time.

The Brief: Revitalising the Great Outdoors

Harvills Hawthorn Primary School is a forward-thinking school that places a high premium on visual learning. They were faced with a common challenge: a large, expansive brick wall in the main playground that felt uninspiring and functional. The objective was to reclaim this space and turn it into a landmark feature that celebrated history while standing up to the British weather.

The primary goals for the project included:

  • Curriculum Reinforcement: Creating a chronological timeline that aligned with Key Stage 1 and 2 history units.
  • Outdoor Engagement: Providing pupils with a productive and educational focus during break and lunch periods.
  • Durability and Safety: Ensuring the educational wall art was weather-resistant, vandal-proof, and safely installed for a high-traffic play area.
  • Aesthetic Improvement: Brightening the playground to foster a sense of school pride and a welcoming atmosphere for the local community.

The Design Process: Bringing History to Life

Our role as school wall graphics specialists began with a collaborative consultation at the West Bromwich site. We worked closely with the school’s history lead to ensure that the content of the outdoor history timeline was both accurate and age-appropriate.

Concept Development and Visual Narrative

The design needed to be clear enough to be read from a distance but detailed enough to engage a child standing right in front of it. We developed a visual narrative that spanned from the Stone Age through to modern milestones. Using a colour-coded system, we helped pupils distinguish between different eras, while vibrant illustrations were chosen to represent diverse historical figures and global events, reflecting the school’s inclusive values.

Integrating School Branding

While the focus was history, we ensured the design remained cohesive with the school’s existing school branding. By using the school’s signature fonts and primary colours within the timeline’s accents, the project felt like a permanent, bespoke part of the Harvills Hawthorn identity.

The Installation: Built for the Elements

Installing school wall graphics outdoors requires a completely different technical approach than internal corridor displays. For Harvills Hawthorn, longevity was non-negotiable.

Material Selection and Finish

We utilised high-grade, 3mm aluminium composite panels (Dibond). These panels are incredibly rigid and do not warp or rust. The graphics were printed using UV-stable inks to prevent fading in direct sunlight and were finished with a specialist anti-graffiti laminate. This allows the school to easily wipe away any dirt or marks, ensuring the timeline remains in pristine condition for years to come.

Safety First

Our installation team, all fully DBS-checked, used secure, tamper-proof fixings to mount the panels to the brickwork. We ensured all edges were smoothed and that the height of the display was perfectly calibrated for primary-aged children to interact with safely.

The Impact: A Playground Transformed

The introduction of the outdoor history timeline has had a measurable effect on the school’s daily life and its perception within the West Bromwich community.

Pupil Engagement and Behaviour

The playground is no longer just a place for running; it is a place for discovery. Teachers have noted groups of children discussing the events on the wall, often “quizzing” each other on dates and figures. This has had a calming effect on behaviour, providing an alternative focus for pupils who prefer quieter, more cerebral play.

Ofsted Readiness

The timeline is a visible demonstration of the school’s commitment to a “broad and balanced curriculum.” During visits, it provides immediate evidence of how the school utilizes every available space—indoor and outdoor—to support the “intent, implementation, and impact” of their teaching.

Community Perception and School Pride

The timeline is visible to parents and visitors, serving as a professional and inspiring first impression. It signals that Harvills Hawthorn is a school that invests in high-quality resources and cares deeply about the learning journey of its students.
