This case study explores how Barnsley Academy used bespoke British Values wall art to transform its Reflections department into a calmer, more purposeful space that supports reintegration and positive decision-making.

Located in Barnsley, Barnsley Academy wanted to create an environment that reflected the school’s ethos while helping students feel supported, respected and motivated to make positive choices.

The Brief

Barnsley Academy approached Design for Education with a clear vision for their Reflections department. The existing corridor and intervention spaces felt uninspiring and lacked a cohesive message that aligned with the school’s pastoral approach. Senior leadership wanted to create a calm, welcoming environment that encouraged students to reflect on their behaviour and successfully reintegrate into school life.

Key Objectives

The school identified British values as the ideal foundation for the project. Respect, democracy, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance all aligned closely with the department’s purpose and the wider values promoted throughout the academy.

The brief focused on several key objectives:

  • Transform the corridor into a more positive and reflective space
  • Reinforce the school’s behaviour and wellbeing strategy
  • Create visual consistency through strong school branding
  • Improve the overall atmosphere within the department
  • Support students emotionally and socially during periods of reflection
  • Deliver a durable long-term solution suitable for a busy secondary school environment

The project also needed to balance impact with sensitivity. Rather than creating overly bold or distracting displays, the academy wanted the space to feel calm, structured and restorative.

The Design Process

Collaborative Consultation

As experienced school wall graphics specialists, our process always begins with understanding how a space functions day to day. We worked closely with Barnsley Academy’s leadership team to understand the challenges faced within the Reflections department and how the environment could better support students.

Developing the Creative Direction

The concept centred around calm, modern British Values wall art that felt purposeful rather than decorative. The designs combined clean typography, muted colour palettes and carefully selected messaging to encourage reflection without overwhelming the environment.

Each section of the corridor was designed to reinforce positive behaviours and personal responsibility while maintaining a welcoming tone. The final designs incorporated:

The Installation
