Creating an environment that reflects the prestige and depth of the English curriculum is a fantastic way to engage secondary school students. At Sir Christopher Hatton Academy in Wellingborough, the goal was to take the English department’s hallways and turn them into an immersive educational experience. By installing a bespoke English corridor mural, we helped the academy move away from plain walls and move towards a space that actively breathes life into the world of literature and language. This Sir Christopher Hatton Academy Case Study explores how we combined iconic book imagery, poignant poetry, and famous quotes to create a department that feels like a true hub of inspiration.

The Brief: Bringing the Curriculum to Life

Sir Christopher Hatton Academy is a high-achieving secondary school that prides itself on excellence. The English department wanted their corridors to match the high standards set in their classrooms. They felt the current space was functional but didn’t quite capture the “magic” of the subject.

The academy’s main objectives were:

  • Subject Identity: To create a clear, unmistakable sense of place for the English department.
  • Inspiration through Content: To showcase a wide variety of curriculum elements, from Shakespearean classics to modern-day poetry.
  • Atmospheric Transformation: To brighten the corridor and make it a space where students feel encouraged to stop, read, and reflect.
  • Vocabulary and Quotes: To place powerful language and famous literary quotes in the direct line of sight of every passing student.

Curating the Content

We didn’t just want to stick a few book titles on the wall; we wanted to tell a story. The design features a “collage” of literary greatness. We integrated:

  • Famous Books: Stylised imagery of classic and contemporary book covers that students study for their GCSEs and A-Levels.
  • Inspiring Quotes: Words from iconic authors that challenge students to think about the power of language.
  • Poetry Sections: dedicated areas for rhythmic and moving poetry, helping students appreciate the art of the written word.
  • The Welcome Message: A bold, warm greeting at the entrance of the wing that immediately signals to students they are entering a space dedicated to English.

Sophisticated School Branding

To ensure the mural felt like a permanent part of the academy, we incorporated elements of the school’s professional colour palette. This helped the secondary school wall art feel cohesive and high-end, fitting the academy’s reputation for excellence.

The Installation: Quality for a Busy Academy

In a large secondary school like Sir Christopher Hatton, the corridors are constantly buzzing with students. This meant the English corridor mural had to be incredibly tough.

Durable Materials

We used our premium, high-tack vinyl with a heavy-duty matte laminate. This finish is perfect for corridor displays because it doesn’t reflect the overhead lighting, making the text easy to read from any angle. It’s also scuff-resistant and easy to wipe down, which is essential for maintaining that “day one” look in a busy school environment.

A Seamless Finish

Our installation team (all fully DBS-checked) took great care to wrap the graphics around every corner and doorway. By removing and re-fitting wall-mounted items where possible, we achieved a smooth, “skin-like” finish. This level of secondary school wall art installation ensures there are no peeling edges, making the investment last for many years.

The Impact: Turning Transitions into Learning

The new English corridor mural has had a fantastic impact on the atmosphere within the department and the wider school community.

Student Engagement and Pride

The hallway is now much more than just a route to a classroom. Students are often seen stopping to look at the book covers or discussing the quotes on the walls. It has fostered a real sense of school pride; students feel that their department is special and that their learning is highly valued.

Ofsted Readiness and Teaching Aid

From a leadership perspective, the mural is a brilliant way to show “Curriculum Intent” to visitors and inspectors. It demonstrates that the academy is using every available space to promote literacy and a love for reading. Teachers have also used the mural as a teaching aid, taking classes into the corridor to find specific quotes or to introduce a new author.

Atmosphere and Wayfinding

The corridor now feels much brighter and more welcoming. By giving the department such a strong visual identity, we’ve improved wayfinding across the academy. It’s now very easy for new students and visitors to find the “heart” of the English department.
