Creating an inspiring learning environment was the driving force behind this science wall art project at Astrea Academy Sheffield. As a forward-thinking secondary school in Sheffield, the academy wanted to transform a plain, high-traffic corridor into a powerful educational journey that would spark curiosity, celebrate scientific discovery and reinforce academic ambition.
Design for Education worked closely with the leadership team to design and install immersive school wall graphics that now take pupils on a visual timeline from the Big Bang to the Moon landing, combining educational wall art with a striking solar system floor installation to create a fully engaging scientific experience
The Brief – Create an inspiring and functional learning environment
Astrea Academy Sheffield is a large secondary school serving a diverse community in Sheffield. The science department and senior leadership team recognised that while teaching within classrooms was strong, the surrounding environment did not reflect the ambition and intellectual curiosity they sought to foster.
The science corridor in particular was functional but uninspiring, blank walls, limited visual interest and no cohesive narrative linking the space to the curriculum. The school’s objectives were clear:
- Create an inspiring and functional learning environment
- Reinforce key scientific milestones and figures
- Improve corridor displays to reduce low-level disruption
- Enhance school branding within the science department
- Demonstrate subject pride and Ofsted readiness
The academy wanted more than decoration. They wanted purposeful science wall art that would embed knowledge, support recall, and elevate the perception of the science faculty.
The Design Process
Collaborative Consultation
We began with a detailed consultation to understand the school’s curriculum focus, departmental ethos and safeguarding requirements.
The agreed theme — “The Big Bang to Man on the Moon” — provided a powerful narrative arc. It allowed us to map key discoveries, inventions and scientists chronologically across the corridor, turning a transitional space into an educational timeline.
Concept Development
Our design team created a bespoke visual concept featuring:
- A flowing timeline stretching from floor to ceiling
- High-impact imagery of major scientific breakthroughs
- Portraits and quotes from influential scientists
- Clear typography for readability in busy corridor settings
- Curriculum-linked content suitable for KS3 and KS4 learners
The visual journey begins with the origins of the universe and progresses through evolutionary biology, physics, chemistry breakthroughs and space exploration, culminating in the 1969 Moon landing.
To enhance immersion, we proposed extending the experience onto the floor with a large-scale solar system installation.
Throughout the design phase, we worked collaboratively with the science department to ensure factual accuracy and age-appropriate content, a hallmark of our bespoke science wall art projects:

The Installation
Materials and Durability
Secondary school corridors experience constant footfall, so durability was critical. We used:
- High-performance, scuff-resistant wall vinyl
- Anti-slip, R-rated certified floor graphics
- UV-stable inks to prevent fading
- Seamless edge finishing for a premium look
The floor graphics were particularly important. Safety and safeguarding are always central to our installations. The solar system graphics were installed with anti-slip lamination and carefully edge-sealed to prevent lifting, ensuring both longevity and compliance.
Minimal Disruption
Installation was scheduled around the school timetable to minimise disruption. Our experienced team completed the transformation efficiently, leaving the corridor clean, safe and ready for pupils.
The result was a striking, cohesive space that feels intentional and aspirational, far removed from traditional noticeboard-style corridor displays.

The Impact
The transformation has had a noticeable impact across multiple areas of school life.
Pupil Engagement
The immersive timeline and solar system installation immediately captured pupils’ attention. Staff report increased curiosity, with students stopping to read facts, discuss scientists and reference the displays during lessons.
Behaviour and Corridor Culture
Previously, the corridor was purely transitional. Now it has purpose. When environments feel valued and thoughtfully designed, pupils respond accordingly. Staff have observed calmer movement between lessons and greater respect for the space.
School Pride and Identity
The science department now has a distinct identity within the wider academy. The large-scale graphics communicate ambition, academic seriousness and celebration of achievement, both historic and future.
Ofsted Readiness
A thoughtfully designed learning environment speaks volumes during inspection visits. The corridor demonstrates curriculum intent, subject sequencing and cultural capital in a highly visible way. Inspectors can immediately see how the environment supports learning beyond the classroom.
Overall, the project demonstrates how strategic science wall art can influence culture, behaviour and perception — not just aesthetics.
