The Brief
The Westgate School, located in Slough, is a large and ambitious secondary setting committed to raising standards and expectations across the board. As part of a broader site refurbishment programme, leaders identified the science corridor as a priority area.
Previously, the corridor was functional but uninspiring. While teaching in classrooms was strong, the surrounding environment did little to reinforce subject identity or celebrate science as a discipline. The school’s objectives were clear:
- Create an inspiring and functional learning environment
- Support GCSE science attainment through visual reinforcement
- Improve corridor displays without adding staff workload
- Strengthen subject-specific school branding
- Elevate the overall perception of the science department
The leadership team wanted more than decorative educational wall art. They needed high-impact school wall graphics that would serve as daily learning prompts and contribute meaningfully to behaviour, pride and Ofsted readiness.

The Design Process
Consultation and Vision Planning
We began with a detailed consultation with senior leaders and the science department. Understanding curriculum priorities was essential. The team wanted to showcase:
- A large-scale solar system installation to spark curiosity
- A clearly structured, easy-to-read periodic table
- Prominent GCSE keywords and inspirational scientific quotes
- Visual consistency with wider school branding
By aligning design concepts with curriculum sequencing, we ensured that the science corridor wall graphics would complement teaching schemes rather than simply decorate the space.
Concept Development
Our design team developed a cohesive concept that balanced bold imagery with functional learning aids. The solar system graphic was designed to span an entire wall, using scale and colour to create impact while remaining scientifically accurate.
The periodic table was carefully structured to ensure legibility from a distance, a key consideration for corridor displays. GCSE terminology and scientific quotes were positioned at eye level to encourage incidental learning during lesson transitions.
The final concept delivered a strong subject identity while integrating seamlessly into the wider learning environment design strategy across the school.
The Installation
Installation took place during a scheduled school break to minimise disruption. As experienced school wall graphics specialists, we understand the operational pressures schools face and plan accordingly.
We used high-performance, commercial-grade vinyl wall coverings designed specifically for busy educational settings. These materials offer:
- Exceptional durability in high-traffic areas
- Easy-clean surfaces
- Fade-resistant print quality
- Smooth, professional finishes
Safeguarding considerations were also paramount. All materials were fully compliant with fire safety standards and suitable for educational premises.
The finished installation created a seamless transformation, turning a plain corridor into a cohesive, impactful science environment that felt purposeful and permanent rather than temporary or add-on.
The Impact
The true success of the project lies in its outcomes.
Pupil Engagement
The solar system wall immediately became a talking point. Pupils frequently pause to identify planets or discuss scale, turning transitional moments into micro-learning opportunities. The periodic table now serves as a daily visual reinforcement tool, supporting recall and familiarity.
Teachers report that students reference corridor content during lessons, demonstrating the value of strategically designed educational wall art in strengthening curriculum retention.
Behaviour and Culture
Clear, structured corridor displays have helped to create a calmer atmosphere between lessons. A well-designed environment sets expectations. When spaces feel cared for and purposeful, pupils respond accordingly.
The science corridor now reflects the department’s high standards, reinforcing a culture of academic focus and aspiration.
School Pride and Identity
Subject-specific branding has significantly elevated the identity of the science faculty. Visitors, prospective families and governors immediately recognise science as a valued and celebrated area within the school.
This sense of pride contributes positively to community perception and supports wider recruitment and marketing objectives.
Ofsted Readiness
While Ofsted judgements are based on teaching and leadership, environment plays a subtle but important role. The transformed corridor demonstrates curriculum clarity, subject intent and high expectations at a glance.
The science area now visibly communicates ambition, coherence and investment, aligning with inspection frameworks that emphasise curriculum depth and quality.
Wayfinding and Spatial Identity
Distinctive corridor displays also improve wayfinding. Pupils and visitors can easily identify the science department, helping the building feel organised and navigable.
