River View Primary School Case Study – Celebrating Reading Wall Graphics

First impressions are everything, and for a school that puts literacy at the heart of its mission, the reception area is the perfect place to tell that story. At River View Primary School in Salford, the leadership team wanted to do more than just hang a few posters; they wanted to create a statement. By installing bespoke celebrating reading wall graphics, we helped them transform their entrance into an immersive world of stories. This River View Primary School Case Study explores how creative learning environment design can turn a functional welcome area into an inspiring gateway that celebrates the magic of books from the very moment a child arrives.

The Brief: Making Literacy the “Front Door” of the School

River View Primary School approached us with a clear objective: they wanted every visitor, parent, and pupil to know immediately that they were entering a “reading school.” Literacy was already a major focus in the classroom, but the reception area didn’t yet reflect that passion.

The school’s goals were:

  • Instant Impact: To create a “wow factor” entrance that promotes a love for reading.
  • Immersive Experience: To use educational wall art to turn structural elements into thematic storytelling features.
  • Positive Arrival: To make the school entrance feel welcoming, magical, and aligned with the school’s core values.
  • Unique Identity: To use school branding that feels playful yet professional, setting a tone of curiosity and joy.

The Design Process: Opening the Page on Creativity

When we sit down as school wall graphics specialists, we look for ways to make the building itself part of the story. For River View, we didn’t just look at the walls—we looked at the doors and the furniture.

The “Giant Book” Concept

The standout idea for this project was the transformation of the main school entrance. We designed a wrap for the double doors that turned them into two giant, classic books. The concept was simple but powerful: every time a child enters the school, they are quite literally “opening a book” to start their day of learning.

The Reception Overhaul

To continue the theme, we turned our attention to the reception desk. Rather than leaving it as a standard piece of office furniture, we transformed it into a row of famous book spines. We also designed a bold header for the space above the reception window, featuring the phrase “Welcome to our Reading School” in the iconic, whimsical Dr Seuss-inspired font. This playful touch added a sense of fun and nostalgia that resonated with both children and adults.

The Installation: Quality and Durability

Transforming high-traffic areas like reception desks and main entrance doors requires materials that are as tough as they are beautiful. For the celebrating reading wall graphics at River View, we used our most durable solutions.

Hard-Wearing Wraps

For the main doors and the reception desk, we used a heavy-duty, high-tack vinyl with a textured laminate. This ensures the graphics are scuff-resistant and can handle the “wear and tear” of hundreds of hands and bags passing by every day. The matte finish was chosen to reduce glare from the bright reception lighting, making the vibrant colours and titles on the book spines really pop.

Safety and Precision

Our installation team, all of whom are fully DBS-checked, worked meticulously to ensure that the door wraps didn’t interfere with fire safety mechanisms or automatic opening systems. The result was a flawless finish that looks like a permanent, custom-built feature of the school’s architecture.

The Impact: Inspiring a School Community

The transformation at River View Primary has created a landmark feature within the Salford community, and the feedback has been incredible.

Pupil Engagement and Pride

The “giant book” doors have become a talking point for the children. Entering the school has become an event in itself, helping to settle pupils and get them excited for the day ahead. By physically surrounding students with primary school wall art, the school has successfully moved reading from the “lesson time” category into a 24/7 part of their school identity.

 Behaviour and Atmosphere

There is a noticeable calm and sense of wonder in the reception area. A well-designed environment tells the children that their school is a special place that cares about their interests. This boost in school pride has filtered through to the parents, who have shared how much they love the new look and the message it sends about the school’s priorities.

Ofsted and Community Perception

For visitors and inspectors, the entrance provides immediate evidence of the school’s commitment to a “reading for pleasure” culture. It is a bold visual statement of the school’s “curriculum intent.” The project has successfully modernised the school’s image, making it a “showcase” for learning environment design in the local area.
