Meadowhead School Case Study – Secondary School Maths Mural

The new Secondary School Maths Mural looking great on the breeze block walls at Meadowhead School in Sheffield.

When you walk through the doors of Meadowhead School in Sheffield, it’s clear that this is a place where learning is celebrated. As part of a big, school-wide project to refresh every department, the team at Meadowhead asked us to help them breathe new life into the Mathematics corridor. They wanted to take a plain, functional area and turn it into something that would really catch the students’ eyes and spark an interest in the subject. The result is a bespoke Secondary School Maths Mural that makes the curriculum feel much more accessible and exciting. This Meadowhead School Case Study shows how we used some clever materials and a bit of creative thinking to turn even the trickiest walls into a fantastic learning space.

The Brief: Thinking Outside the Box

Meadowhead School gave us an interesting challenge to solve. Unlike modern buildings with smooth plaster walls, the maths corridor was made entirely of painted breeze block. Because these walls are bumpy and porous, your standard vinyl school wall graphics just won’t stick properly or look the part.

Our main goals for the project were:

  • Smoothing things over: Finding a way to get a high-quality, flat finish on a very uneven surface.
  • Bringing maths to life: Using maths wall art to explain tricky topics like trigonometry and geometry in a visual way.
  • Standing the test of time: Making sure the display was tough enough to handle the daily rush of a busy Sheffield secondary school.
  • Creating a “Maths Hub”: Giving the department its own clear identity with professional school branding and great learning environment design.

The Design Process: Measuring Twice, Cutting Once

As school wall graphics specialists, we knew we needed to move away from vinyl and towards something more substantial. The project called for a more “architectural” approach to ensure the walls looked great for years to come.

Choosing the Right Materials

We decided to use Dibond, which is a lightweight but very strong aluminium composite. Because these panels are rigid, they sit perfectly flat over the breeze blocks, completely hiding the bumpy texture underneath. To make the Secondary School Maths Mural even more practical, we added an anti-graffiti laminate. This means the school can easily wipe away any scuffs or marks, keeping the secondary school wall art looking brand new.

Getting the Detail Right

Because Dibond is so tough, it’s very hard to trim on-site without it looking messy. To avoid this, we did a really thorough survey of the corridor in Sheffield beforehand. We measured every single doorway, corner, and light switch. We also chatted with the school’s electrician to arrange for the plastic trunking and light fittings to be temporarily moved. This meant we could have every panel cut to the exact size in our factory, so when we arrived to install them, they fit together perfectly like a giant jigsaw puzzle.

The Installation: A Neat and Tidy Finish

The installation was all about the finishing touches. By re-fitting the electrical trunking over the top of our new Dibond panels, we achieved a really clean, “built-in” look. It doesn’t look like something that’s just been stuck onto the wall; it feels like a permanent part of the building.

We took extra care around the corners and doorways to make sure there were no sharp edges or gaps. This approach makes the Secondary School Maths Mural much more durable because there are no edges for students to accidentally catch or peel, which is always a big plus in a busy school environment.

The Impact: A New Way to Learn

The new-look corridor has made a real difference to the atmosphere in the maths department at Meadowhead.

Getting Students Talking

The walls have effectively become a “giant textbook.” Students often stop to look at the different formulas, puzzles, and historical facts we included. It’s a great way to take maths off the whiteboard and put it into their everyday world. This kind of secondary school wall art helps make the subject feel a bit less intimidating and a lot more relevant.

A Professional Feel

For parents and visitors, the corridor is a great “showcase” of what the school is all about. It shows that Meadowhead really values its subjects and invests in the best for its students. We’ve also found that when an area looks this good, students tend to take much more pride in it, leading to a calmer and more respectful environment between lessons.

Better Identity and Pride

With the addition of the school’s own school branding, the department now has a really strong identity. It’s much easier for visitors to find their way around, and both the staff and students have told us how much they enjoy working and learning in such a bright, modern space. It’s amazing how much a bit of well-placed colour and design can boost school pride.
