The Brief – impactful, curriculum-linked educational wall art
Driffield School and Sixth Form had invested significantly in refurbishing their science department. The new labs were modern, functional and well-equipped, but once the building work was complete, staff noticed something missing.
The walls were blank.
While the facilities were cutting-edge, the environment lacked warmth, visual stimulus and subject identity. Leaders wanted to ensure the refurbished department reflected the school’s ambition, academic standards and pride in science as a core subject area.
Key Objectives:
- Create an inspiring and functional learning environment
- Reinforce key GCSE science terminology and concepts
- Add warmth without compromising professionalism
- Support Ofsted readiness through purposeful displays
- Ensure durability and longevity within a busy secondary setting
The school required more than decorative posters. They needed impactful, curriculum-linked educational wall art that would complement the refurbishment and maximise the return on their capital investment.
The Design Process – Listening First
We consulted closely with senior leaders and the science department to understand how the new labs would be used and what curriculum priorities needed reinforcing. Each of the 11 laboratories covered different specialisms across Biology, Chemistry and Physics, so we developed tailored concepts for each space.
Curriculum-Led Concept Development
Rather than generic imagery, we created bespoke science wall art featuring:
- Key GCSE terminology
- Core topic headings
- Subject-specific diagrams and iconography
- Visually engaging scientific imagery
The aim was to subtly embed learning into the environment, ensuring displays acted as passive revision tools. Typography was carefully selected to remain readable from across the room, supporting recall without overwhelming pupils.
Blending Warmth with Professionalism
To counteract the clinical feel of the refurbished spaces, we introduced colour palettes aligned to each discipline, vibrant yet sophisticated tones that complemented laboratory fixtures rather than competing with them.
The result was a cohesive set of secondary school wall art installations that elevated each room while maintaining a calm, focused atmosphere.

The Installation
In high-traffic science labs, durability is critical.
All murals were manufactured using premium-grade, wipeable vinyl suitable for busy secondary environments. The materials were chosen specifically to:
- Withstand daily wear and tear
- Allow easy cleaning in line with safeguarding and hygiene requirements
- Maintain colour vibrancy over time
- Adhere seamlessly to newly finished walls
Installation was carefully scheduled to avoid disruption to lessons. Our experienced team ensured precise alignment, flawless finishes and clean edges, particularly important in newly refurbished spaces where attention to detail reflects the overall quality of investment.
The completed displays integrated seamlessly into the labs, appearing as a natural extension of the refurbishment rather than an afterthought.

The Impact of Science Classroom Murals
The transformation was immediate.
Increased Pupil Engagement
Teachers reported that pupils began referencing the wall displays during lessons, particularly when revisiting key terminology. Having subject vocabulary permanently embedded within the classroom environment supports memory retention and reinforces high academic expectations.
Rather than relying solely on temporary paper displays, the murals act as consistent, long-term learning prompts.
Improved Behaviour and Focus
A thoughtfully designed learning environment design has a subtle but powerful effect on behaviour. The once clinical rooms now feel purposeful and inspiring. The clear subject identity creates a sense of belonging and pride, encouraging pupils to treat the space with respect.
When classrooms feel valued, behaviour often follows suit.
Enhanced School Pride and Department Identity
The science department now reflects the quality of its facilities. Staff feel the environment matches the ambition of their curriculum, and pupils recognise that science is a flagship area within the school.
The cohesive visual identity across all 11 labs strengthens internal school branding and reinforces consistency across the department.
Ofsted Readiness
Permanent, curriculum-linked displays demonstrate strategic thinking in learning environment design. Inspectors increasingly look at how environments support learning beyond exercise books. These murals clearly show that the school has invested not just in buildings, but in pedagogy.
Stronger Community Perception
Visitors touring the refurbished science block now experience an immediate “wow” moment. The combination of modern facilities and impactful educational wall art communicates aspiration, investment and high standards.
