Creating subject-focused environments is one of the most effective ways schools can reinforce learning beyond the classroom. At Coop Academy Bebington in Bebington on the Wirral, the ICT department wanted to transform an underused stairwell into an inspiring space that reflected the importance of digital learning.
Working with Design for Education, the school commissioned a large-scale computer science wall art timeline tracing the story of computing from the earliest mechanical concepts through to the future of technology.
The Brief
Coop Academy Bebington is a forward-thinking secondary school that prioritises digital literacy and future-ready skills. However, the stairwell leading to the ICT classrooms lacked identity and did little to celebrate the subject.
The school wanted to transform this prominent space into something more purposeful — an inspiring computer science wall art display that would showcase the history and evolution of computing while creating a stronger visual identity for the department.
The stairwell offered a large canvas but also presented practical design challenges due to its height and vertical layout. The project needed to work across multiple levels while remaining visually cohesive and easy for students to follow.
The objectives were clear:
- Create an engaging timeline of computing history
- Inspire curiosity about technology and innovation
- Establish a strong “welcome” moment for the ICT department
- Improve the visual impact of a high-traffic stairwell space
- Support a more engaging learning environment design
The Design Process
Our design team worked closely with the school to develop a concept that would turn the stairwell into a visual journey through computing history.
The timeline begins with Charles Babbage and the invention of the early mechanical computer, before progressing through key technological milestones including early programmable machines, the rise of personal computing and the development of the internet.
As students move up the stairs, the timeline unfolds step by step, using bold graphics and concise educational text to guide them through the evolution of digital technology.
The upper section of the display features a prominent “Welcome to ICT” graphic, helping to establish a clear departmental identity.
This approach ensured the display functioned as more than decoration — it became a piece of educational storytelling embedded into the school environment.

The Installation
Installing the display within a tall stairwell required careful planning to ensure perfect alignment across multiple wall sections.
Our team used high-quality printed vinyl graphics designed specifically for busy school environments. These materials provide a durable, professional finish while remaining easy to clean and maintain.
Each section of the timeline was installed with precision so the design flows naturally as students walk through the space. From the base of the stairs to the top landing, the graphics remain visually consistent and easy to follow.
The result is a large-scale piece of educational wall art that transforms what was once a plain stairwell into a striking feature space.

The Impact
The finished display has had a noticeable impact on the atmosphere around the ICT department.
Increased Student Engagement
Students now encounter the computing timeline every day as they move between lessons. The visual format encourages curiosity and helps reinforce key milestones in computing history.
A Clear Department Identity
The stairwell now acts as a welcoming gateway to the ICT department, helping students and visitors immediately recognise the subject focus of the space.
Improved School Pride
Large-scale school wall graphics like this help create an environment that feels purposeful and inspiring. Staff and students have responded positively to the transformation.
Stronger First Impressions
For visitors and prospective students, the dramatic scale of the display creates an immediate sense that technology and digital learning are valued within the school.
