Languages Department Creates an Inspiring Welcome for Students

At Design for Education, we work with schools across the UK to create impactful languages wall graphics that strengthen identity, inspire pupils and enhance learning environments. Harper Green School in Bolton approached us as part of a wider refurbishment programme designed to give every curriculum area its own visual identity through bespoke educational graphics.

For the Languages department, the challenge was particularly unique. Positioned at the top of a stairwell with limited uninterrupted wall space, the area required a creative approach that would maximise impact without overwhelming the environment. Through carefully designed school wall graphics, stair riser messaging and culturally inspired visuals, we transformed an overlooked transition space into an engaging and memorable entrance to the department.

The Brief

Harper Green School wanted the entrance to its Languages department to feel vibrant, aspirational and reflective of global culture. Unlike larger corridors or open communal areas, the department entrance was located within a narrow stairwell, presenting spatial limitations that required a more inventive design solution.

The school’s leadership team wanted the finished environment to:

  • Create a strong identity for the Languages department
  • Promote cultural awareness and curiosity
  • Inspire pupils through positive messaging
  • Make better use of transitional spaces
  • Support the wider refurbishment strategy across the school
  • Improve the visual consistency of the learning environment

Rather than treating the stairwell as a constraint, the project focused on using every available surface creatively. Walls, stair risers and smaller architectural features were incorporated into the overall concept to ensure the area delivered maximum educational and visual impact.

The school also wanted the space to feel authentic and pupil-focused rather than purely decorative. The final concept, therefore, combined world culture imagery, multilingual greetings and inspirational quotes from notable figures who speak more than one language.

The Design Process

Developing a Creative Solution for a Challenging Space

Our design team worked closely with Harper Green School to understand both the physical challenges of the space and the wider goals of the refurbishment project.

Because there were no large feature walls available, the concept relied on layered visual storytelling across multiple surfaces. This approach ensured the stairwell felt immersive and cohesive from every angle.

The final design included:

  • Large-format cultural imagery representing countries and communities from around the world
  • Stair riser graphics featuring the word “welcome” in multiple languages
  • Motivational quotes from well-known multilingual individuals
  • Clean typography and colour palettes aligned with the department identity
  • Strategic placement of visuals to improve flow and visibility

By incorporating the stair risers into the overall design, the space immediately became more interactive and visually engaging. Pupils moving between lessons are naturally exposed to language and cultural references throughout the journey into the department.

The Installation

Durable Graphics Designed for Secondary Schools

The installation phase was carefully planned to minimise disruption to the school day while maintaining high-quality finish standards throughout the stairwell.

We used durable commercial-grade materials specifically selected for educational environments. These materials are designed to withstand the demands of high-footfall areas while remaining easy to maintain and clean.

Particular attention was given to:

  • Safe application on stair risers and narrow surfaces
  • Long-term durability in busy circulation areas
  • Smooth, professional finishing around corners and edges
  • Consistent colour quality across all graphic elements
  • Compliance with safeguarding and health and safety considerations

The completed installation delivered a seamless appearance that integrated naturally into the wider refurbishment project. Despite the limitations of the space, the stairwell now feels intentional, welcoming and visually impactful.

Our experience delivering both secondary school branding solutions and large-scale educational graphics allowed us to maximise every available surface without creating visual clutter.

The Impact

Creating a More Engaging Learning Environment

The transformed Languages department entrance has had a noticeably positive effect on the atmosphere surrounding the subject area.

The stairwell now acts as a visual transition into the department, helping pupils feel immersed in language and culture before they even enter the classroom. This contributes to a stronger departmental identity and reinforces the value the school places on languages education.

Supporting School Pride and Department Identity

One of the most significant outcomes of the project has been the sense of pride created within the Languages department itself. By giving the area a distinct identity, the space now feels more aligned with the wider refurbishment vision across the school.

Enhancing Ofsted Readiness and Wayfinding

Modern, well-designed educational spaces also support wider school improvement objectives. Clear visual identity and cohesive learning environment design help demonstrate investment in pupil experience, curriculum promotion and school culture.
