When Lowbrook Academy in Maidenhead approached Design for Education, they were looking to transform an awkward and underused area of their building into an inspiring STEM hub. Through carefully planned STEM wall graphics, immersive door wraps and intelligent learning environment design, we helped the school create a vibrant, future-focused space that captures pupils’ imagination from the moment they walk in.
This project demonstrates how well-designed school wall graphics can completely redefine a space, not just visually, but culturally and academically.
The Brief
Lowbrook Academy, a thriving primary school in Maidenhead, wanted to develop a dedicated STEM area that would promote curiosity, ambition and enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering and maths.
However, the designated space presented challenges:
- It was relatively narrow and irregular in shape
- Multiple doors interrupted usable wall space
- The area lacked identity and visual cohesion
- It did not yet reflect the school’s forward-thinking ethos
Senior leaders wanted more than decoration. Their objectives were clear:
- Create an immersive STEM environment
- Inspire pupils to see themselves as scientists, engineers and innovators
- Make better use of a previously awkward space
- Support curriculum delivery through visual prompts
- Enhance Ofsted readiness with purposeful corridor displays
The Design Process
As experienced school wall graphics specialists, we began with a collaborative consultation process. We worked closely with the leadership team to understand their curriculum priorities, school values and spatial limitations.
Concept Development
Given the irregular layout, we proposed an immersive wraparound concept. Rather than seeing the doors as obstacles, we turned them into assets, designing full door wraps to extend the visual canvas and create a seamless STEM landscape across walls and entryways.
The creative direction included:
- Bold scientific imagery
- Engineering and technology themes
- Inspirational STEM role models
- Engaging typography promoting curiosity and resilience
- Curriculum-linked content suitable for primary learners
By wrapping all doors within the space, we visually expanded the area, making it feel larger and more cohesive. This approach created depth, continuity and immersion, turning what was once fragmented into a unified learning zone.
Throughout the process, we ensured the design aligned with the school’s wider school branding and ethos, so the new STEM hub felt integrated rather than isolated.

The Installation
Installation quality is just as important as design. For Lowbrook Academy, we used:
- High-performance, durable vinyl materials
- Scratch-resistant, wipe-clean finishes
- Professionally wrapped door surfaces for longevity
- Safeguarding-conscious installation methods
All graphics were produced in-house to ensure colour consistency and precision cutting. Our installation team worked efficiently around the school timetable to minimise disruption to learning.
Door wrapping requires particular attention to detail. Edges were carefully sealed, handles precisely trimmed, and finishes checked to ensure durability in a high-traffic primary setting.
The result was a polished, seamless finish that feels permanent and purposeful, not temporary or decorative.

The Impact
The transformation of Lowbrook Academy’s STEM area has reshaped not only the physical space, but how it is used, perceived and valued across the school community.
Turning a Limitation into a Strength
What was once an awkward, fragmented area is now one of the most distinctive zones in the building. By wrapping the doors and creating a continuous visual narrative, the space feels intentional and expansive rather than constrained.
Staff have commented that the area no longer feels like “just a corridor”, it now has purpose. This psychological shift is significant. When a space feels designed and valued, pupils treat it accordingly.
Embedding STEM into Daily School Life
Rather than being confined to specific lessons, STEM now has a visible and constant presence within the school environment. The graphics act as subtle daily prompts, reinforcing vocabulary, celebrating innovation and normalising ambition in science and technology fields.
Pupils encounter aspirational messaging and curriculum-linked visuals every day. This consistent exposure helps to:
- Build familiarity with key concepts
- Strengthen subject identity
- Encourage curiosity beyond lesson time
The space now supports informal learning as much as formal teaching.
Raising Aspirations from an Early Age
One of the school’s core goals was to inspire pupils to see themselves in STEM careers. The immersive design introduces children to big ideas in an accessible, age-appropriate way.
Teachers report increased pupil conversations about inventors, experiments and future ambitions. The environment makes STEM feel exciting and attainable, particularly important at primary level, where early perceptions are formed.
Strengthening Whole-School Identity
The new STEM area aligns closely with Lowbrook Academy’s broader ethos of ambition and opportunity. Visitors immediately recognise that the school prioritises forward-thinking subjects and modern learning experiences.
This consistency between environment and ethos strengthens:
- Leadership credibility
- Parental confidence
- Community perception
The project has effectively become a visual statement of intent.
Supporting Teaching Without Adding Workload
Importantly, the graphics are permanent and professionally installed, meaning staff no longer need to create and maintain temporary classroom or corridor displays in this area.
This has reduced workload pressures and ensured that the space remains high-quality and consistent throughout the year. Teachers can focus on teaching, confident that the environment already reinforces key themes.
Creating a Memorable First Impression
For prospective families touring the school, the STEM area now provides an immediate “wow” moment. It signals innovation, creativity and investment.
In competitive local education landscapes, this type of distinctive learning environment design can make a meaningful difference in how a school is remembered.
