Careers Information, Advice, Support &
Guidance (CIASG) at St Mary’s College
complements our ethos of assisting students to
prepare for the opportunities and challenges of
the world. Guidance in the main is delivered
through experienced form tutors and learning
mentors, backed up by specialist staff who
are available for more personal and ‘one to
one’ consultations. CIASG events (e.g. Parents
Information Evenings on Work Experience
and Progressions) are planned throughout
the year with outside speakers and specialists
making regular contributions to the Guidance
programme.
There are comprehensive Careers Information,
Advice, Support and Guidance resources in
the Learning Resource Centre incorporating a
wide range of books and leaflets. There is also
up-to-date Careers Information, Advice, Support
and Guidance software and web links on the
school intranet.
Individual Specialist Guidance
Interview
We have a specialist Guidance adviser, who
can help young people to make informed
decisions at crucial times in their lives. Students
can make appointments through their Year team.
Students can also ‘drop in’ for a quick chat in
privacy, at break, lunchtime or after school.
Careers
“Students are supported to
make exceptional progress.”
OFSTED 2010
The aim of the school is to foster the moral, spiritual, cultural, mental and physical development
of all pupils, believing that each individual pupil has a right to the maximum access to a full
and exciting curriculum. In its widest context the curriculum is everything related to school.
This includes the normal school timetable, the school ethos, all extra-curricular activities and
what happens at break and lunchtime. By constantly seeking ways to raise achievement, we
aim to provide an environment which allows the needs of every individual to be addressed and
to ensure everyone is able to flourish.
Years 7 and 8 have the same school curricular provision, in line with the demands of the National
Curriculum:
Art, D & T, Drama, English, Geography, History,
ICT, Mathematics, Music, Modern Languages,
PE, Religious Education, Science
In addition, there is a Personal and Social Education programme that is delivered through half-day
tutorial sessions and forms an integral part of most other lessons.
Students have the opportunity to study ICT as a discrete subject at KS4 & KS5.
Years 7 & 8
Years 9, 10 and 11 have a core of English Language and Literature, Mathematics, Physical
Education, Religious Studies and Science.
Most students will continue to study a Modern Foreign language
All students will select 4 other options from a wide-ranging and comprehensive subject list.
Citizenship is delivered through half-day tutorial sessions and is an integral part of most schemes
of work.
It is expected that all students undertake a period of Work Experience in Year 10. Some students
do extended work placements.
Years 9, 10 & 11
SM6 delivers outstanding post-16 provision at St Mary’s College. We offer a wide range of Key
Stage 5 courses, including Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, AS and A Level qualifications. SM6 enjoys
a high number of returning students and external recruits who want to access our top quality 6th
Form offer and state of the art facilities. SM6 has developed two distinct academies within the 6th
Form: the Academy of Sport enables students to benefit from high quality coaching programmes
in a variety of sports alongside their academic studies, whilst the pioneering Medical, Health &
Social Care Academy (MHSC) works collaboratively with local industry leaders in the fields of social care and health to provide real world
experiences alongside academic qualifications in the field. It is the only established academy of its kind in the UK presently.
Results in all areas demonstrate that SM6 is extremely successful. We welcome applications from students of all religious denominations from
Hull, the East Riding and beyond.
